I had an amazing experience with Shultz's Guest House. I've adopted a lot of dogs and this was by far the easiest and best. The people who work and volunteer are extremely nice and helpful. I also got to meet the founder of this rescue and immediately loved him. What a sweet man. Would definitely adopt from here again.
We have slight PTSD from our previous dog that had to be rehomed due to her aggression. It was heartbreaking for all of us but she got to the point where no one could come into our home without having to crate her or muzzle her. Two years later, we finally decided to adopt a new pup. We were adamant we needed a good temperament and wanted to avoid any 'working' breed dogs or breeds that tend to be aggressive. We were looking at various pups on petfinder when my husband saw an instagram link to Shultz Guest House. They had so many adorable pups and all lived onsite. We made an appointment, Martha was very accommodating - helping us find a date we could all be there (family of 5 with teens who work crazy hours). She brought us to a visting room and discussed our situation/needs and we mentioned the few pups we saw online we were interested in. Her descriptions were very helpful and they matched up perfectly with each dog we met. She advised against seeing too many dogs in one visit as it can really spin you around and you start to confuse or blend them together. We ended up meeting 4 dogs that day. But the first one we met was the one we feel in love with, Beans!! He is exactly as she described and fits in well in our home (fingers crossed - it's been exactly 1 week). So a big thanks to Martha and her staff at Shultz's Guest House. They're doing amazing work. Had it not been for their organization, Beans (and many others) would have been euthanized in a kill shelter down in TN.
Unfortunately I have to leave this review. We made an appointment and missed it due to unforeseen circumstances. We tried to make another appointment to which we were told “you are no longer welcome at the guest house” . We replied and apologized to no response. It’s a shame because this place seems nice. They seem overwhelmed and maybe that led to their decision, but I’m sure there are other shelters who need your help more than this place does. There’s little to no communication if you’re interested in the dogs.
Unfortunately not a great experience in our search for our new rescue pup. I know it’s all volunteer and they do their best for both the dogs and adopters but their process makes it a difficult experience depending on the appointment availability and volunteer you’re matched with. Our volunteer was snippy and easily frustrated with any questions. After a few attempts with Shultz’s we went to Forever Home in Medfield just to see how their process worked. It was amazing - they brought us in to meet ALL the dogs they had available - had the details of each from their behaviors to best guess breed and adult size and we found the puppy perfect for us (she wasn’t even on our radar based on only a picture and was bigger than we were looking for but had the personality to make her the right decision… ) As opposed to waiting for an appointment and missing out on the dog we were interested in having been adopted before we could meet the dog. The appointment that did happen with Shultzs resulted in the dogs (limited to 3) being brought into a small room - with the volunteer telling us whether the dog was a fit)
The only reason this place is getting 5 starts from me is because its about the dogs and this place is great for the dogs. The people who run it deserve 0 stars. The person met with me and my son for 15 minutes. I told her about the fact I work from home and the dog would be with someone all day, that we are planning to take the dog to training classes and we are just very excited to finally have a dog join our family. I further explained that the dog is a buddy for my son, apparently they heard me saying that my 10 year old son would be taking care of the dog 100% which was not true. They didn't have a dog that day that would be suitable for our family but she told me to keep checking the site. So I did and reached out via email to see if we can come back and take a look at a new dog that just came there. That's when I received a scolding and condescending email back saying that dogs are a lot of responsibility and that it's not an overnight decision and that I shouldn't get a dog for my son as a present. I was floored by the rudeness of that email. I am a huge advocate to adopt and not shop. I went there to help adopt a dog but after that email I thought that maybe the only option is to buy a dog. Since the person really didn't try to get to know us or our lifestyle but focused on one sentence. I replied back explaining that this decision was not made overnight but it's been in the making for years and we are finally in a place where we can open our home to a dog in need. I never heard back from them again. Luckily I decided not to give up on adopting just yet and we went to another animal rescue. The people were wonderful and friendly. We were lucky enough to find the goodest boy there who is enjoying his life with us running around in the grassy field, digging, sniffing and doing general doggy stuff.
Adopted a little dog (shrimp- now penny) - impressed by the process- thorough, efficient, warm. Place looks beautiful- well maintained and spacious. When we came one group if dogs was out for a walk, in two other pens dogs were being petted by staff or volonteers. Very impressive.
