I go here to volunteer walking dogs and grooming cats with students from a local school. I'm impressed with how friendly and knowledgeable their staff are here. If you're looking for a family pet, stop by Old Drum Animal Shelter first. Lots of wonderful pups and cats that need a forever home. ❤️
Forgive me, this may be long. I adopted my adorable dog from here a year and a half ago when he was 3 months old. I love him, and the adoption process was very smooth and easy, however, I did have some not great observations. 1, he was not given a parvo vaccine as part of the full battery of vaccines they told me he had been given. I have some experience with caring for dogs, so I noticed this quickly, but someone less experienced may not notice which is very dangerous 2, He had papillomavirus, and it developed within a week of him leaving the shelter. I have a feeling other dogs in the shelter had the virus, and I feel like it should have been mentioned to me that it was a possibility he had it. 3, He came to me and had an absolute downright terrorizing fear of any grooming activities. He would cry and shake at the sound of running water, and while sink taps don’t scare him anymore, bathing is still a struggle even now. I found some pictures on the facebook page and it looks like they allow some sorority girls from the nearby college to volunteer and help bathe the animals, and I found a photo of my dog in a bathtub posed with a girl. Obviously help is needed with shelters, but I think they should probably train them better how to bathe animals without making the experience traumatic. 4, I do not believe they were upfront with me regarding my dogs history. They said they found him wandering around on the road, but it appears he came in with a group of other dogs with the exact same coats and markings, and it seems to me he was part of a puppy mill bust, which I think should have been mentioned to me upon adoption. Puppy mill dogs can have certain issues from poor breeding and a possible history of abuse, which I think I shouldve known when I took him home. Overall, I think this is a shelter full of people who do truly care about the dogs and other animals they rescue, and I had an overall decent adoption experience. I just wanted to mention these things for anyone who adopts from here to look out for. For the shelter, a little update on my puppy, he is happy and healthy! I adopted Sargent Sniffers, who is now named Zuko. He is a year and a half and a massive Great Pyrenees/Dane mix. He is very loving and sweet. Ill attach some pictures for you guys. I know this isnt the greatest review, but I do still appreciate you all for the great work you do, and wanted to offer an update.
All no kill shelters are great! We got to donate 100s of dollars of supplies this month from our collection at work, plus work (Motus integrated) kicked in 500.00 in food, toys, leashes, and more! Everyone try to pitch in and help this Nobel cause!!
We had the best experience at Old Drum Animal Shelter. We found a puppy on Petfinder and called the shelter to ask about her. They put a hold on her and called us back when they said they would after she had been spayed. They were all friendly, helpful and accomodating, as we had an hour drive to get there. They seemed to know all of the dogs well and gave us great information about the puppy we adopted. When we left we had dog toys, a sweater, and a few days worth of dog food. We absolutely love our Lily (formerly Kool Aid, lol).
I have volunteered here a few times and the people there are so nice and would politely point you in the direction you need. The animals are well cared for and the kennels and cages are cleaned plenty. The animals seem happy and the cats love to play!
This shelter has given me the life time of an experience. The staff is beyond friendly and so much more, the story of me and the dog I adopted ( Goose) is beyond unique now. He has filled the hole where I thought nothing could, I made multiple visits while waiting to adopt him hoping and praying he would be mine. The staff stayed in contact with me all throughout this process and made it thee most memorable experience I will ever have. Huge shoutout to them and I will always go to them if I ever need anything and will send my friends and family their way to adopt their forever fur babies. Thank you so much for being apart of mine and Gooses adventure.
