Went there a couple weeks ago because my 2 year old cat had a bladder blockage the Saturday of memorial day weekend. They refused to treat him because we couldn't afford the $500 deposit and didn't have care credit. He died because we couldn't get him care until Wednesdays. My baby is gone because these people care more about money than they do the community. If you are going to take emergency patients, the least you can do is offer payment plans or lower the deposit amount because literally nobody I know has $500 on hand. Do better.
I brought my dog Jasper to the ER May 5th Sunday morning because he had a weeping sore on his ear and blisters on his groin area. I was told the sore and ear were not infected and told to treat him with benedryl and over the counter anti itch cream and follow up with my vet. He came out of the er worse than he went in. His blisters were even bigger and redder than when I left him. I immediately called my vet on Monday. They had me bring him in and said he had a pyoderma/staph infection. They had to give him steroids and antibiotics and prescription strength anti-itch medication. They said all of this should have been done at the ER. The ER also didn’t even weigh my dog right so I was giving him more Benadryl than what I was supposed to. The ER said he was 81 lbs and he his actually 53 lbs. The ER also had to sedate him to even exam him and my vet didn’t even have to do that. I’ve brought my animals to the Purdue ER and have never had a problem. This ER has saved several of my animals through out my life. I am so angry at this last experience. I no longer feel that this is a good place to bring my animals. I am including before and after images of Jasper’s sores the day of the er visit. I did call and have an investigation launched on this case but the doctor justified everything wrong they did. They did a cytology of the inside of the ear. Not the wound behind his ear because they wanted to see if he had a yeast infection. They weighed him wrong because he wiggled. Then the doctor said that prescribing antibiotics for his pyoderma/staph infection wasn’t necessary because the antibiotics could cause him to become antibiotic resistant and cause gastrointestinal issues. I was going to just drop this and not leave a review until I found out they double charged me. Fortunately they caught that and refunded the 2nd charge. However, today was the last straw. I was billed another $28 today for the cytology of the wrong body part. It is July 2nd and I just got an added on bill for may 5th. I will never go to Purdue or recommend them again. They were once a reputable establishment but are now in it to make money without actually doing anything. My vet now recommends Indianapolis but I will be willing to drive to Ft Wayne or further before I ever go here again.
My shih poo is being treated by the nephrology department for her kidney stones. She recently had a stent placed in her ureter and was at the hospital a few days. She was treated and monitored exceptionally well the whole time. I would especially like to single out veterinary student Nicole ('24) who gave my dog, Sophie, lots of love and attention, taking stress off not only Sophie but myself. I know from all the pictures and videos she sent that Sophie ate up all the attention she requires to be happy and content, and I'll always be grateful Sophie wasn't too stressed about being away from home alone for a few days.
Dr Togawa and his team are great! We had to have emergency surgery because my dog had rupture discs that effected his nerves. My dog had no hind leg or bladder functionality. He treated our case with urgency and gave me the realistic statistics to make the best choice for my dog. It’s been 6 weeks and I’m so glad I have Dr Togawa and Purdue because my dog is now start to walk. I appreciate the realistic information during the decision making process and I’m very happy about the results.
We had a wonderful experience working with the Purdue University Small Animal Hospital. Our spaniel was diagnosed with patent ductus arterioris- fixable with an innovative minimally invasive surgery, but without treatment inevitably leading to heart failure. We live hours away in southwestern Ohio, and our research found that there was no place in Ohio, including Ohio State's veterinary hospital, that could do this operation at a price we could even fundraise for-- and time was of the essence to save our dog's heart. A Cincinnati cardiologist referred us to Purdue- saying they would do a great job and charge us basically half of her fee. Wow! Less than two months later, with the help of a friends fundraiser, I took the looooong drive to Purdue, stayed for two days, and brought our pup home with a newly healthy heart and normal life expectancy. The staff were kind and clearly cared about our dog-- she seemed to have made friends who wanted to say goodbye. :) Followup was thorough and remarkably low cost, again in comparison with everywhere else we could have taken her. Top notch academic healthcare, very fair cost, and kindness from everyone (one warm, caring staff member even told me where to find good comfort food nearby while the surgery was happening). Highly recommended!
This place is a joke when it comes to billing. All they want is their money. We spent almost $5000 on our dog even after having to have him put down. Never once got a call in a week and a half about owing more money until they call to tell my his ashes are ready. I get there and find out oh I owe $750 more. Of course I paid it thinking okay after everything my dog went through and putting him down, it is past us. Little did I know I get a call today that they finalized his bill after two weeks and I owe over $200 more. You would think when your animal is in there and you give an estimate and when you get close to that estimate you call and ask for more, that would be it… but now we owe $1000 after everything. Not only that, if you use care credit, they can see what you have available but have to run each transaction separately. To help a family out you would think they would see you have the balance and not charge the amount until you are done so you can get the best financing. No!!!! I call care credit today and they can’t do anything to help that. It is at the place of business that they do it! They don’t care about the families. They only care about getting their money! Oh and when my husband called the day we had to put him down to check on him the student said he is doing great!… three hours later the vet calls me to tell me he is now septic and his kidneys are showing trama. Do not tell someone their dog is doing great when he has been there for 5 days and was obviously doing worse!!!
