Caring, wonderful organization that truly cares for cats. We got our babies from them almost a year ago and can not say enough good things about this place and the people that devote their time there.
2 stars because they are friendly and they do care very much about their cats. But I do think they care so much that it sometimes becomes detrimental to their mission -- this is how we felt in our case. APA's adoption process makes it difficult to quickly get cats in homes. I understand it's in the best interest of the animals, but most other shelter's processes are a 1 hour event (sometimes less). APA has around 40 or so cats in a very small house, so the process should focus around getting cats into homes with families in the most efficient manner possible, so that APA can quickly help other cats in need -- We felt that APA's adoption process doesn't support this primary mission of most shelters. There are many other shelters where the processes are much more simplified, and less time consuming. Unless you're okay with multiple conversations, the shelter contacting references, and a multi-day process, I would just go with another shelter. We were very sad to hear that we were approved to adopt after being questioned about how our children would deal with a cat and awaiting calls to our references. In the end, I found out that we were approved to adopt, but because the process took so long and seemed so invasive, we had already moved on and decided to adopt elsewhere. It genuinely made our family sad to know the cat we fell in love with at APA has to stay in the shelter longer because of the unfitting adoption process. He could have been in a loving home days earlier if it wasn't for that. Posting a picture of our happy KY Humane Society senior kitty who we adopted after feeling uneasy about the APA process.
The women at APA truly love what they do. The all volunteer staff want to make sure any cat that comes into their care is adopted by the right individual, so that it lives a long, happy life. I was a 1st time pet owner and Linda patiently walked me through every step of the process, and has even helped answer my questions since the adoption. They will check all of your references, so make sure you dont waste their time with the application process. If you can't adopt a cat right now, please consider donating supplies or money. Adopting Neko was one of the best decisions I have ever made. She is adorable!
This is the best place to adopt a cat. I volunteer every Thursday, the cats are sooooo sweet! :)
I feel bad for the cats in these people's care. Filled out an application to adopt a 6 month old cat and because we have 4 "large" dogs they denied us the opportunity to help this baby. Yes we have big dogs but they get along with cats. They sleep with cats. My two German Shepherds even clean our current cats. Understand before you try to help the cats in their care that they leave the decision up to the foster parent. This particular cat was at pet smart when we filed for adoption. I do not understand the process behind their decision so beware before you take the time to go through their application and get attached to one of their cats.
The people here care greatly for the animals they work with, and do their best to match adopting families up with the best fit possible. It is a great volunteer organization in this community, and a great service to the cats they help.
