From having visited some of the sites (shelters) over the years and having had conversations with staff and residents, I have found Penates to be a well-run, caring agency. Moreover the changes in upper Management have brought about increased salaries and benefits for staff, and a much better service environment for the clients that are served by Penates.

This review is going to be seven years old, but it's still a recounting of my experiences. At the time I found the place to be terrible. Looking back though I have to be honest. I'm actually fond of the Dixon location. The facilities were basic, but not run down. They were well maintained. The only time I remember any services or utilities failing in my nine months there was during Hurricane Sandy, and that can hardly be blamed on the shelter or it's staff. The food was good most of the time. Some days the staff didn't bother cooking, but those were rare. Most of the time it was cooked and hot food, not just something cheap or instant. There were snacks readily available at most times thanks to donations. Residents were required to perform regular chores as part of their stay, but nothing unsafe or unsanitary. The sort of chores people have to do in their own homes to begin with. I recall the social services being helpful. Granted, these situations are rarely nice or kind, but seven years ago they helped me. Given my current location I honestly wish I could come back to the Dixon house and continue the services they were helping me with. It's not the most fabulous of accomodations, but compared to where I am at the moment it's a five star hotel.
