The front desk staff and vet techs are incredible. I waited for an hour and a half due to some emergencies the vet was handling in the morning, no worries, they were all so kind, I didn't mind waiting at all. Got into the exam room, waited 30 minutes for the doctor/owner to come in. Right away, he comes to the dog and presses and prods at a visibly infected wound, then proceeds to tell me the dog 'almost bit him' and he needs training.. The dog did get mouthy and did the nibbling thing, because he has been protective of his paw. But also the doctor made no effort to comfort or familiarize himself with the dog before approaching him. He is a stray dog with high anxiety. I told him I work full time and live alone right now so training hasn't lined up with my schedule. He then began commenting on the harness, which is good advice but the arrogance wasn't needed. I was letting the dog sniff around (we had waited for two hours at this point and yes he was getting very antsy). He says "he's not being very patient" um, he was patient for two entire hours! Doctor says "he's leading YOU around", He tried to show me just how close the dog needs to be at all times, and ended up knocking the dogs head on the exam table..If id come for training lessons fine, but you're a doctor, DO BETTER. If the entire experience had begun with this interaction I wouldn't have stuck around for two hours and given my hard earned money to this place. I left feeling very uneasy about the whole thing. I even canceled my check up with him. You misjudge a dog you've met for all of 5 minutes, meanwhile he was getting complimented on how patient he was for two hours in the waiting lobby. The comments were just rude and very unprofessional. So don’t bring your dog here if he’s a puppy that can’t wait for 2+ hours and will get antsy :) that is not allowed here and you will be given an unwarranted training lesson.
The vet and the others in this office are very kind. They were gentle and caring with my girl. They made sure she was healthy and gave her shots for the UTI. I am sure they will be just as caring every time we take one of our babies there.
If i could give zero i would. Showed up 15 minutes early and then waited for 35 minutes before being talked to by anyone. (we got there at 3:15 and didn’t see anyone until 3:55) When the doctor came in our dog barked once. The doctor immediately steps forward yelling at us to not let our dog jump at him and how disrespectful it is. He didn’t say hello or greet us- he stared at us. He yelled at our dog and told him “No, you sit!” then disciplined us on our dog. We immediately asked to leave and get our refund back. He didn’t say any words other than him yelling at us that we are not allowed back. The receptionist was so apologetic it was so embarrassing for him. The worst establishment.
I usually come here for my cat’s care because other places never take new patients, so I’m more or less stuck with these guys; they really don’t explain things to me regarding my cat at all, and—aside from the main vet and the front desk lady—are generally just standoffish. It makes an already stressful visit even more stressful. There’s usually a wait as well, somewhere between 15-30 minutes after the appt time depending on how busy they are. That said, they do generally take solid care of my cats, and I haven’t had anything notable issues regarding that yet. Overall I’d go somewhere else if possible, but coming here isn’t the end of the world; it just isn’t the nicest experience to be totally honest. 2.5/5
We have used Animal Medical services multiple times and if other vets were accepting new patients, I would switch in a heartbeat. It is very inconvenient that they aren't fully staffed and are restricted with what they can do on Thursday or Fridays. Additionally, the only vet regularly staffed, doesn't communicate with us before he does things to our pets and then we are stuck paying extra. Especially when we can pay less paying online. Our most recent visit, they applied flea and tick medicine without our permission. If they would have asked we would have said we already did it ourselves a week and a half before. I don't recommend using this practice if you have a choice and I hope they take this feedback to heart.
I have gone to Dr. Harfst for 30 years. He has seen all of my pets. I have called him after hours and on weekends in the past when I had an emergency and needed my dog put down. He came to my home and never complained once. He was very compassionate and understanding. I received a sympathy card in the mail with everyone’s signature at the clinic on it the next week. After rescuing my dog Oliver from the Humane Society, they wanted me to get him neutered when he was still a baby and his balls hadn’t even dropped yet. The Humane Society kept calling wanting me to bring Oliver in to be neutered before he was 6 months old. Dr. Harfst said that was too soon. I took Oliver to Dr. Harfst at Animal Medical Service for all of his shots and to be neutered. He is the best Veterinarian in town as far as I’m concerned! Yes, his clinic is busy, but worth every minute and penny knowing that my dog will get the best care! Dr. Harfst and his staff at Animal Medical Service are the best in town!!! Cindy Beehler
