In early November I adopted the sweetest little cat- only 5 pounds and very unsure. Her name is now Florence and she is a robust and trim 8 pounds- she I beautiful and brimming with personality. She has changed my life! I am so proud of her and of the organization that helps find these loving animals homes. Thank you

My husband saw I had fallen in love with a Rabbit at MSPCA Nevin’s farm. He surprised me with him for my birthday. Our family had been searching for the right pet for a year and our hearts fell in love with Pinto. They did express to me they did not have much information on Pinto from his previous owner, only that he had a corneal scar and scar on his right ear. I spent a long time the day I was there, asking many questions about him to two different staff members. One was in the adoption center and the other worked in the Vet services. I asked in length about possible health conditions, what the rabbit would need, issues to watch out for, costs of medical care etc. NEVER did overgrowth of teeth needing to be shaven for life come up in conversation. Never was it mentioned that this breed is proned to have dental and breathing issues from breeding. We adopted Pinto. I noticed after a week of having him his right eye had discharge. I called the MSPCA and explained my concern considering we just got him and they told me to bring him back for evaluation. I explained the paperwork stated his exam was done under sedation so how could they have possibly evaluated him properly? By week 3, we bring him in to be evaluated and the Vet states his molars have overgrown and are blocking his tear ducts. He will need to have his teeth shaved every 4-6 weeks for life. They offered to cover the first teeth shaving but they could not book it until more than a month out. We asked what the cost is usually and they stated $400!! Who can afford that?? We took him home and I called vets in New Hampshire and Maine asking if there were more affordable options. The cheapest I could find would be $200 because he would need to be sedated every time they do this to him. Meanwhile, Pinto went from being sweet to aggressive and territorial. He would nip my ankles when I came in his room , stand on his hind legs in a “boxing” stance, he would run away in fear of me….all behaviours I did not see the first 3 weeks. In the first few weeks he nipped both my kids but I believe it was due to food aggression and fear. After that, he never nipped them again. I finally called back in to speak with a manager but actually spoke with the behavioural specialist there. I explained how there were so many failures from start to finish. This has been the most traumatic experience my family has been through. I asked to bring Pinto back and select another animal. They agreed to that or offered my adoption fee back (which I am grateful for) but explained to me when he returns he will be euthanised! I am not sure why that information was shared with me but it immediately made me feel uncomfortable, responsible for him and guilty. I started balling my eyes out and continued crying for the next day. We are already beyond disbelief we have to return him but now knowing he will be killed? I wish I could have been spared that at the very least. I made every attempt on Facebook groups to find someone willing to take him despite his health issues and was unsuccessful in finding someone. At which point, I had no other choice than to surrender him. I spoke to Caitlyn the behavioural specialist in immense detail about how horrific this experience has been. All the humans in Pinto’s life failed him and it deeply saddens me that their are no rehabilitation attempts made for Rabbits. She was very understanding and explained that Pinto’s life would not be a good one constantly being put under sedation and the fear of transporting him back and forth may worsen his behaviour. For those reasons, they have to euthanise him. I understood her explanation, however, he should have never been put forth for adoption without proper behavioural and medical examination. You shouldn’t make an animal seem more adoptable just for them to find a home. I have children and this could have mounted to worse. I’m horrified of the experience. I REALLY hope they learn from this and do better for the animals and the families.

We had a great experience at Nevins farm. Our experience starts out sad but has a more than happy ending! 2 weeks ago we had went and picked out a handsome 1 year old rabbit named Louie, he needed to be neutered so we had to wait a week. We were so excited, the wait felt so long. Unfortunately, we got the phone call that Louie didn’t make it through his neuter surgery likely due to an underlying condition. Of course this is not the Mspca veterinarians fault, things happen and surgery is always a risk. We were heart broken, we only met him once but we were anticipating him and preparing for a whole week. The staff at the mspca were so kind and sympathetic, over the phone we had let them know we will come look at other bunnies they have available. We live a little far so it was a 40 min drive for us to get there. When we got there, we found Doug. He was the complete opposite of Louie, he was 4lbs bigger than him and the hides we had setup at home for Louie were definitely too small for doug, but Doug just stood out to us. One of the wonderful staff members at the mspca helped us get to know Doug but letting us meet him on a more personal level, she even had a list of bunnies we may be interested in since Louie’s passing on a little sticky note. I really wish I remembered her name, but if you’re reading this, thank you so much and we greatly appreciate you and your kindness! Anyway, we came home with Doug and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
