I so enjoy hangin’ out at the barn. After moving away from our small horse farm and settling in Scotts Valley, a huge void remained. We really missed the daily interaction with our horses. Canham has filled that gap in a huge way. We go up there to muck stalls, groom horses, sweep the barn, feed hay, clean tack and enjoy the camaraderie shared with other volunteers. It has also been an education. Abused and neglected horses or wild horses saved from slaughter are truly a ‘different animal’. Julia trains us how to interact and be safe around these rather unpredictable, vulnerable horses. It takes Julia’s patience, knowledge and intentional routines that make the rehab and eventual adoption of these beautiful and deserving horses possible. Here is a picture of a rescued mustang that arrived at the farm today. I predict that in a very few months with Julia’s guidance and generosity of time, this mare will be transformed. We can only do this with the amazing generosity of our donors.
Canham Farm has been a great place to volunteer for the past several years, witnessing amazing results with rehabilitating and caring for many horses as well as adopting them into safe, forever homes. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete an application on Canham Farm website.
I have had a wonderful time volunteering at Canham horse rescue. Julia is always so appreciative and kind. Her patient and compassionate work with the horses and volunteers really shows in how calm and joyful the atmosphere is at the barn. The horses are very healthy and happy, they are some of the most playful and friendly horses I have ever worked with even through they come from troubled pasts. It really shows how much healing happens for them here. I highly recommend volunteering and/ or donating to this rescue.
I have been a volunteer at Canham Farm for 7 months now and have had nothing but wonderful experiences. Julia is very appreciative for anything that I have done and is extremely knowledgeable with the horses and is willing to share her knowledge. She has rescued horses (prior to my starting) and is rescuing two more wild mustangs from the BLM/Devil's Garden facility. I have nothing but admiration for her and will continue to volunteer every week.
As a volunteer at Canham Farm for 3 years I have seen the founder successfully rehabilitate and find forever homes for several horses. Current rescued horses are provided safe haven, are well cared for, and provided time and attention as needed based on the individual horse. Being a part of a dedicated group of volunteers to help horses is both rewarding and a privilege! I highly recommend Canham Farm for consideration of volunteer time and donations.
As a volunteer for 3 years at Canham Farm I want to respond to the negative review by "Babsa". "Babsa" changed her user name to repost this review; the first time posted Google found it inappropriate and removed. If this post is also removed she may come up with yet another name. I feel like i am back in Middle School. This 'volunteer' overstated her expertise. While she may truly believe she was very experienced, she required constant supervision and guidance (free training) for safety reasons, which the founder willing gave despite the time needed away from horses to provide. On the third 'volunteer' day Babsa boldly stepped into a confined area with a yearling, prior abused mare, and two people who were managing them quite nicely - Babsa did not ask if she could enter, nor did she announce herself. The yearling startled creating a domino effect and in a moment all three people and both horses were at risk of injury. The founder immediately, firmly, and appropriately told Babsa to leave the confined space. The work being done could no longer be continued without changes. Whether angered or embarrassed, Babsa later quit; which was frankly a relief. Babsa then proceeded to use social media sites to write negative reviews...after only 3 days of (more than typically needed) training. Despite "Babsa's" signature agreeing not to speak or write negatively about this non-profit, she clearly has done so. Babsa's review and relentless attempts to damage a non-profit's reputation reveals more about her than the non-profit. This non-profit works with rescued horses in need of rehabilitation and, frankly, does not have time to meet the desires or demands of volunteers. Babsa e-mailed me that she preferred to do what she 'loved', come when it was convenient for her, and work directly with the horses (not where any volunteer starts regardless of stated expertise). As a volunteer I am there to support and defer to the founder who does the hard work - we are lucky to be able to participate in such a worthy cause. I have seen remarkable rehabilitation of horses take place at Canham Farm, and many found their forever homes instead of taking a trip to the slaughter house or living a life of continued neglect. The founder of Canham Farm Horse Rescue works HARD, the volunteers are dedicated, respectful, and all know that working with rescued horses has risks and as such more awareness and caution is needed. As a volunteer I can attest to the fact volunteers do NOT have to care for the two non-rescue horses at the farm. It is a choice each makes to do or not do. If Babso spent more then three days there she would have figured this out - but then she was there more to be with the horses than to care for them doing tasks needed. I hope Google will again remove her post, and find a way to prevent her coming up with yet another name, or using a friend to repost her misleading review.
