Description US Horse Welfare and Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. We are a national horse welfare organization, a horse rescue saving horses from slaughter, abuse and neglect, and equine-assisted learning and therapy facility. We strive to create public awareness about the plight of America's horses going to slaughter, from the older horse in the back field of the retired couple to the 2 and 3 year old thoroughbreds coming off the track that didn't make the grade. "People just don't know" is our mantra, for most Americans are unaware of the underground horse slaughter pipeline and the horrific trauma and abuse the horses go through until they take their last breath. Meanwhile, on the farm you can witness first hand the healing these equines do for humans

My son signed up for Barn Buddies at US Horse Welfare & Rescue this past January as something to do to get out of the house. My son has Autism and I was a bit hesitant at first but was reassured by staff that he would have a great time. The staff was right, what started off as just a Friday activity ended up stirring in him a passion and love for horses that I've never seen before. The instructors make learning and taking care of the horses fun that every time I pick him up, he says "Mom this was the best day ever."

I had a great time visiting the rescue! The farm was easy to find and everybody was kind and knowledgeable. The horses are the main event and they were sweet and clearly well loved. Bob the cat (aka Bobcat) is quite the ambassador and welcomed us with an invitation to pet him. The farm is tranquil and it was fascinating to learn about where the horses came from and get to hang out with them a bit. I'll be looking out for more events.

I have been holding off on this review for a while. However my experience with this “charity” is still bothering me. I bought a ticket for Breakfast Yoga with Horses in September through Eventbrite. I drove out to the advertised address only to find a beautiful home and a small area for horses. There were no people and no signs telling you where to go. Maybe if you are a local you would know where to go but I am not. I called the number in hopes to find out where the event was actually being held and no one returned my call. I eventually left. I sent an email and received a response from Susan Mitchell who apologized and said she would return my fee. To this day, and two emails, the fee was not returned. I know I am going to get a ton of heat from the public on this review. Just know it is not about the money. It’s about saying you will do something and then doing it. Susan Mitchell did not even respond to the emails. Maybe there are some other circumstances I don’t know about but never following up with someone does not look good for a supposed charity. I say supposed because now I wonder how much charity is actually happening at this rescue. I know I saw an area where someone lives that is very expensive; this address was given as the event spot. Susan Mitchell told me that I should have gone to the property next door. How would I know that? With a connected property next door, that must be very expensive to keep up so I do wonder how much truly goes to charity. Hopefully my money that was kept truly goes to the horses

In response to Lisa Adams. Why did you not got to the door and ring the doorbell or go to the barn to ask someone where the Yoga class was being ?. I do not find this a valid review of a fantastic horse rescue, whose branches go nationally to rescue unwanted horses. You did not go check the horses. Inferring the horses' money goes to The Michell's house, without seeing their books is a ridculous and slanderous inference. As I know the rescue, Susan has paid out of her pocket for many years to rescue the horses. Rescues usually are NOT self sustainable. Her very successful.businessman husband has generously helped sustain the rescue until it becomes self sustaining. I hope you understand you need to find out more information before making such egregious, slanderous claims about US Horse Welfare and Rescue. I will make sure your yoga money is returned asap.

I need to respond to the negative response & rating from Sarah Z. She is a young woman who did not find what she needed because she was against all advice from the experienced trainers. It wasn’t anything related to horse training or care that made her leave. She is angry & lashing out. Her review comes from a place of anger & revenge. I joined as a volunteer after being laid off after 30 years. This farm & the horses have become a lifeline for me. I knew nothing about horses when I started & they are my healing grace. I’ve decided to join the board of directors so that I can not only help rescue these beautiful animals from slaughter but also develop the programs that will allow our horses to heal others. There are so many good & amazing things happening...please don’t let the petty revenge of 1 person influence you!!

I am writing this review in response to the horrible review sarah lilija left. I have been a volunteer at USHR for 2yrs with my client , and have enjoyed every minute of it. Not only has the farm helped my client, it has also helped me grow better as a person and has helped heal me in many ways. I would also like to say , the owners are wonderful people. Mr. Mitchell is always kind , has a smile on his face and always takes a few seconds out of his busy schedule to ask how we are and how things are going (he may even crack a joke here and there. ) 😁. He is a very pleasant man. Mrs. Mitchell is just as friendly and a very kind hearted person as well, she wears her heart on her sleeve when it comes to helping not only the animals she rescues (dogs and horses) but she is also passionate about her volunteers as well. Mrs. Mitchell is always willing to take any and all opportunities to make any task a learning experience no matter how small it may seem. she is quick to find a way for everyone to learn from it. The one thing I admire about her is no matter what the concern or how little question may be that i call her about , she never gets upset or mad instead she is very patient and explains it to me. These are the type of people you would want to work for. From the time I started at the farm till now everyone is willing to do there best and make sure the horses (don’t forget Bob Cat ) get the best of care. Now as for the false accusations about the money they raise..... well I have seen the following so far New fly sheets New ankle booties New winter jackets Plenty of hay Lots of fresh shavings Grain Vet care as well as hoof care I’m sure there are other things I just can’t think of right now. So in closing i would like to say to Sarah “shame on you for what you said , after all the Mitchell’s have done to help you with Thaddeus, and whatever else they did to help make it possible to keep him boarded there, just shame on you)
