We adopted our baby boy Wally here in 2017, it was a great experience & has been ever since!
An unhappy experience that wasted a lot of my time and caused me a lot of unnecessary pain. I wanted to feed my dog a raw diet. I told them that upfront. They continued to make me think for 5 weeks that I would be able to adopt this one particular dog. I came to visit the dog every weekend. But the veterinarians they work with only believe in industrial food for dogs. One of their employees suggested I feed the dog food that has been cooked in a crock pot. But I would never do that as that is not the design of a dog's body to eat food like that. Mostly that would just give them diarrhea. I have done my research and I wanted to feed my dog a Barf diet. They just should have said upfront that they prefer their dogs be fed industrial food for their lifespan and I would have just walked out the door. But for some reason, I was kept there to think I could adopt. It was extremely stressful. Either way, I eventually got my dog who is thriving on a raw diet. Good bye! And if the owner treated the adoptees with more respect and stop acting like we need her more than she needs us, maybe Hugh would have found a home by now.
I had a positive phone call with Kathy Reid initially, but when we visited the shelter to see Torie, Kathy seemed bothered by our presence. After submitting an application and providing references, Kathy called to say my references didn’t speak well of us, and based on her observations, we couldn’t adopt the cat. Additionally, I reached out to my references, and they mentioned they were caught off guard by the negative feedback Kathy had given. She was also rude when speaking to my references and wouldn’t tell me what her concerns were. I left feeling confused and frustrated by the lack of clear communication.
One of the best shelters I've ever seen. We adopted our dog from there and couldn't be happier with the shelter and their care for the animals they house.
Such an incredible organization. This shelter loves and values each animal that passes through their doors and the teams are dedicated to placing each pet in the best home possible. I am not a candidate for dog adoption as I have a two year old toddler, but it’s completely understandable as to why certain policies are in place. When my daughter is older, we will most definitely adopt a dog from HOKAFI.
If you try to adopt here, do not answer any questions regarding whether your current cat is an indoor/outdoor, even if that means they are in a fenced backyard and rarely spend time outside. I was disqualified from adopting here because 20 minutes of outdoor time a week for my cat in a supervised environment is considered a "red flag".
