Description Action For Animals Humane Society was founded in 1983 to shelter and provide care for abused, abandoned and stray dogs and cats of Westmoreland County. We adopt animals into responsible homes and vigorously promote the spaying and neutering of all pets to eliminate the cruelty of animal overpopulation. We are a non-profit, non-government funded, no-kill shelter that keeps animals free from the threat of unwarranted euthanasia.

Me and friend took our cat, Beebee, to be spayed. They did an excellent job on her. She recovered quickly with no problems and the staff was excellent. It's great that they offer low cost, quality services.

I have gotten two cats and a dog fixed here. If you call nardeccea spay and neuter fund you can get vouchers to help you pay for getting your animals fixed here. They do a great job. I travel 45 minutes one way to come here. It's worth it. They are friendly. They take good care of your animals. And they also have a cat room you have to visit while you are there!

This place is the Fort Knox of humane societies. Requires an insane amount of extensive paperwork for an application. I got denied to adopt a cat due to not being at my residence for 6 months yet, even though I have emotional support animal documentation, and the seal of approval from my landlord. This was after visiting with the cat and falling in love with her. Weeks later, my partner, whom also fell in love with the cat, tried to go and adopt her. We do not live together. He filled out the whole application, to which the staff interrogated him as to if he knew me. They proceeded to deny him for the sole fact that he is my significant other. It is disappointing to see a humane society be so incredibly strict. SO many of the animals there are elderly due to the fact that they have such strict adoption guidelines, leaving many animals homeless for years on end.

Overall the adoption process was super simple. I was looking for a dog that would pair well with my pit mix who's a little rough when he plays. I also wanted a dog that would bond with my partner easily. My boyfriend and I were able to walk around and meet the dogs outside to see a little bit of their personality. We needed up picking 2 dogs we wanted meet. When a member of the staff, Donald, had knowledge of which dogs we were looking at as options he let us know about both dogs individual personality and how they behave around. We were able to let the dog we ultimately chose meet our current dog. My boyfriend was super nervous about it so having so many of the people there helping with the whole meeting process. They were so helpful through the whole thing. Almost 2 days in and the dynamic duo are like the best of friends. With the way they romp around I swear they knew each other before bringing the new pup home. Big thank you to Donald and everyone that assisted in the whole process!

Honestly my one star isn’t even because we didn’t get the kitten. My one star is because of the entire experience. We walked in & the front lady sent me wondering around myself. I walked past half a dozen staff and nobody spoke to me, directed me, told me where brie or cheddar was, nothing. I’m lost wandering and ask again so the lady walks away. Ok… I go back and find the kittens in a cage. Nobody would tell me why or what cheddars medical issue was but I couldn’t see her. Ok… I get bri and one lady gives us a smelly pee covered room. I asked to go elsewhere because it stunk & I got yelled at lol but ok I went in the room beside it. No toys or nothing for a cat. Smelled worse. Whatever. I’m in with Bri for about an hour & they come up making a deal about home ownership. They found proof we moved on. Then… the problem is because my other rescue kitten female isn’t spayed yet. So your cats in the home must be spayed or u can’t adopt. Ok… I deal with it. My one star is because of the treatment, wandering on my own, nobody to talk too or answer questions. The process should be to ask basic disqualifications BEFORE you meet the cats. If something is an absolute & something probably common… it shoulda been mentioned on the phone prior to visiting but at least prior to meeting the cats. I bonded with Brie for an hour and can’t take her home because my second rescue kitten isnt able to get fixed until the rescue gets her in… which is scheduled for a few weeks out. So please change your process! Ask questions before you let people bond if you’re going to say no over something. I could see if one was male, but both my Missy and your brie are female. You care enough to have a process but not enough to make sure only acceptable people meet the cats. I understand doing an application after so that you don’t waste your time calling people back who don’t want it now but if there’s certain required qualifications then you can talk 2 mins to ask them before I even stepped past the entrance. Saves everyone on time & heartbreak. So please take what I’m saying into suggestion. I wasted 3 hours in total of driving and one hour at the office and it could’ve been avoided if I had been told about the requirements. I hope Bri goes to a great home with other fur babies who will love her as much as we would’ve if Missy was fixed already & im sure she will be gone before the rescue gets Missy fixed. I have no control over either thing, so I’m asking that you take what I’m saying and spend a few minutes talking with potential adopters BEFORE they bond with an animal.

The staff was very helpful & informative, unfortunately they are filled to capacity & cannot accept any stray dogs!
