After having 2 owners, and found very malnourished, my wife and I adopted our second dog last week. He is thin but healthy now thanks to the Darke County Animal Shelter. They save strays and place them in loving homes. They do tremendous work and deserve more recognition than they receive. We love all our animals very much, and Zeke is our third rescue dog, here with three rescued cats.
I got my new bestie here. The place was clean and the animals looked well taken care of. Of course I wanted to take them all. The staff were all very nice. I was very Lucky.🙂
Be VERY CAREFUL they will tell you everything is perfect with dogs to try to get them out of their care. They will act like it is your fault. The dog we had gotten there had been there multiple times prior, and we were told it wasn't her fault. They said it was poor owners that would let her run out the door. Well, I now feel their pain as she can climb chain link fence. She has done this multiple times to try to get our neighbors cats in which we were told she was good with.... as we have a cat in our house hold. We were looking for a dog that got along with cats. We held our kid when we visited because our daughter wasn't walking at the time but was told she was good with kids. We would say older kids as she has shown aggression towards our toddler. It was lies after lies and after spending time trying to work the issues out, we haven't had any luck and calling for help they try to make you feel as if you are the problem. Major owner shaming.
Adopted a dog from the Darke County Animal Shelter the end of September of this year. We were told from them that she is good with cats, dogs, and kids. After two months of working with her and failing, we tried to bring her back. She is aggressive towards my now 1 year old who recently started walking and she has tried to get our house cat multiple times. They said they are full, which I can understand even though every time we go in there's lots of space and even the owners dog is boarded there when he is out of town. Anyways, the main reason for the 1 star is the lady I spoke to on the phone, and how she treated me just for asking if she knew anywhere who would help because she is a danger in our household and we don't want to put her outside with winter coming. She ignored the entire fact of almost blood baths in our household and that my child is now in danger that she is walking. She continuously spoke over me and said we can pay to get her behavior training and "you brought your kids in so" YES I BROUGHT MY BABY I HELD at the time as she couldn't even walk . I also want to add we have called several rescues and many have mentioned that people contact them to rehome animals that they got from Darke County Animal Shelter "ALL THE TIME". Seems like they say whatever to get animals out and then refuse to take them back when it's a safety concern for children. Here I was thinking this place wanted to find the right homes for animals.
Even though they were planning to wash out cages that day, they were more than happy to let me visit with the pups I came to see. Staff was very welcoming, friendly and helpful, and helped me find a room to meet them. Adoption paperwork was handled quickly and professionally, too. I would absolutely recommend this shelter!
Great staff, got my dog license there. Just wish all the animals could find a good home 😪
