I most definitely suggest HSU as your first stop if you're considering adopting a pet ! The staff there are very knowledgeable and truly love their line of work and take pride in it. The adoption fees are more than reasonable and each animal there receives the best vet care, social training, etc that you could imagine.

Found our kitten on petfinder.com. We live around a hour away and made a trip out there to meet our kitten before applying. My son and I fell in love so we filled out our app. Thankfully we were approved but we had to wait until she was fixed to bring her home which is totally understandable. The shelter kept in contact with me via email. Now we have our stealthy girl popping out for cuddles. I would definitely recommend adopting here. They care about the animals and insure they are place in good homes.

I got my best friend in the entire world here. He is the absolute most well behaved animal I’ve ever met. I saw him on petfinder and I just KNEW. They let me pay his adoption fee online and held him for me because I live a few hours away and couldn’t get out there to pick him up for a week. I was so in love with this shelter that I convinced my parents that this was the only place worth getting a dog. Shortly after I got my dog they made the several hour drive to get one as well and he is also an absolute angel. I don’t know if there’s something in the water in Uvalde that’s making all the dogs there incredible but I’m endlessly grateful this shelter exists. Thank you for bringing so much joy and love into my family.

Small place but good people. They took the time to meet my wife and I during “closed” hours and allowed us to adopt a cat same day. Friendly staff, low adoption prices and great communication. Highly recommend.

Terrible experience here. There is a “COMMITTEE” making decisions about application approvals that obviously have not considered at all what kind of home the pet would go to. The Director Diana was great but the “COMMITTEE” does not recognize her as the Director and overruled her recommendation.

Very bad experience both times... I have a beautiful yard and every time I apply for an animal I get denied it's been twice I tried to get my kids and animal weather it be a dog or cat and got denied both times... From what I understand it do to a vet we cancelled on which had a big part of it when they ask all the vets around town even though we take our animals to new Braunfels... Sad we can't adopt an animal do to a vet being upset regarding how we canceled do to not liking there care towards us or the animals... Maybe one day this place will be better but I guess not till they actually ask the right people or source instead of ones we don't even use
